Helping In The Ministry

Because of being an missionary kid (MK), I have had the privilege to work the ministry in ways, that many of you might not have been able to. For example: I started watching the nursery when I was 9 years old (I did it all by myself for 4 years). I had as many as 12 kids in the nursery at one time. I loved every minute of it! In the Philippines, everyone loves babies, so I have grown up around kids. I don’t think they are annoying or that they get in the way. Babies are a gift from God, and each one is special.

Also, in the past 3 years, I have had the privilege of playing the piano for the church services. At first, I was very nervous! My hands would shake the whole time, but as time went on, I gradually lost my nervousness and began to enjoy it. I have played for multiple Christmas programs, weddings, VBS, teen connections, and camps.

This past year, I had the privilage of being an assistant leader at teen camp. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really got to know the the young people on my group in ways that I havent been able to before. We had fun, but the most important part was that I know that many of the teens on my group made decisions for God that will last a lifetime.

I have also had the privilege of teaching a kids class (all by myself). I have had as many as 27 little munchkins in my class (ages 5-7). I love my kids! They are so eager to listen to the stories and play the games. They are so sweet! I can remember countless times when I received little flowers that the kids picked up for me, cute little cards that they wrote to me, and the many hugs that I got every week. I feel so blessed that I had the opportunity to impact the lives of these precious blessings.

Two years ago, I had the privilage of doing all the church attendance. Every class down to the main service has its own folder. I would take the numbers and put it into a report for my parents. I love doing all sorts of paperwork; so this was fun.

There are also many deaf in the Philippines. In our area, we have a huge deaf school so we have been able to start a deaf ministry. For as long as I remember, I have always wanted to learn sign language. My dream didn’t come true until we left on furlough, and some missionary friends sent a lady to help cover our responsibilities while we were gone. When we came back from furlough, we were surprised and delighted to hear her say that she would stay and help us. I was estatic when I learned that she knew sign language. I started lessons, and she invited some deaf people to church. I was so thrilled when a couple of deaf started to come regularly. We started a deaf Sunday School, and I was allowed the opportunity to help. I led the songs, and sometimes I was able to translate for the main services. I am so blessed to have been able to help in this ministry.

Also, this past year, I was able to help paint the backdrop for our camp. The backdrop was huge! The complete picture consisted of 6 ply board pieces. It took me and my friend 3- 4 weeks to complete the painting. We would stay up till 2 or 3 in the morning painting, then wake up and paint again. We truly enjoyed ourselves! God has allowed me to do all this and more. All I can say is thank you Lord for allowing me to grow up in the Philippines!
