You Know You’re an MK When….

Here are a couple of my favorite “You Know You’re an MK When….” You hesitate before drinking the tap water. In the Philippines we were never allowed to drink from the tap because the water is so dirty, and it would make us sick. We have water dispensers and that is the only place we drink water from. When I came to America, on one of our first furloughs…..I went over to one of my friend's house. We had been playing for a while, and we were thirsty. So, she just walked over to the sink, filled her cup, and started drinking the tap water! I was so scared for her! I thought she was going to get sick! Then she told me that in America you can drink the water from the tap. To this day, I still hesitate before getting a cup full of water from the tap. You think rain on a metal roof is the best sound in the world. This is by far my favorite! Every house in the Philippines has a metal roof. So, when it rains (and it does quite often in the rainy season) it hits the metal roofs and makes lots of noise. I love it! When I was little, that was my favorite sound to go to sleep to. So relaxing! A special occasion must be celebrated in a certain way or you feel that you haven’t celebrated it properly. This is so true for me. Many different holidays or special occasions are celebrated in a certain way in the Philippines. New Years for example, in the Philippines at midnight the city explodes with sound. Hundreds of fireworks are set off in and around the city. There is food to eat and friends to fellowship with. It is so much fun and totally Filipino. In America, most people just have a small party, or they just go to bed. There is no noise. And it is a very quiet New Years. Being an MK makes me different, but different is good. I love the way I grew up! I wouldn't trade it for the world:)
