Our story started three years ago, in April of 2015, when my parents, sister, and I flew back from furlough for a six-week trip to the Philippines. We were there to put on our annual youth camp. The Doney family arrived 24 hours after we did for their survey trip. They spent a week with us. That is when I met Christopher for the first time. During the week, Christopher and I talked about the desire we both had to go into missions. We found out that we had many things in common like playing the piano, teaching, reading, and playing board games. By the time the week with us was over, I had definitely noticed this guy.
I always promised myself that I would never entertain the thought of a guy if my parents didn’t approve. So, I pushed every thought of Christopher out of my mind till a couple days later. My dad and I went out with a visiting preacher. The preacher asked if my parents had anyone in mind for me. Before I could answer a negative, my dad replied and said “Yes, there was a guy here last week that really impressed us. We are praying about him. It could be possible.” I was floored! They were impressed with him too! That was the first time that they had ever mentioned that they were impressed with a guy!
Over that next year, we saw each other three different times, and our friendship progressed. The next year in February, after him and his family moved to the Philippines, he asked if we could start communicating. We started communicating once a week through email. In April and May, I took a trip back to the Philippines to help with camp. During those two months, we spent time together as friends, did the camp choir together, and were team leaders at camp on the same team. Christopher moved back to the states in July to start working and establishing himself for his future. In August, we started messaging. Two weeks later, we started calling every week.
The first week of December, my parents and I went down to Ohio to visit Christopher for the weekend. On Saturday, we went ice-skating and out to eat for dinner. Just before supper, Christopher handed me a bag and told me to open it. He said that it was an early Christmas present. I opened it, and it was an ornament that said Today. I knew immediately what that word meant. Christopher was telling me that Today was the day we would take our relationship to the next step! I teared up a little. I was so happy. It was a dream come true for me. He then asked me if I would court him. Of course, I said “YES!”
And that my friends is our story
