Superstition is a part of life in the Philippines. Some of the most obvious superstitions involve babies. Some believe that if air blows on the soft spot of a babies head, then the baby will be very gassy. So, even if it is 100 degrees, most babies will have a hat on his/her head. Also, if you comment on a baby’s cuteness, it means that you are calling bad spirits to the baby. Consequently, if you call someone’s baby cute, that person will then say “Buyag” and spit on the baby to make the evil spirits go away. One time, I was burping a baby, and a lady told me that if I burped the baby too hard, I would break his ribs. So, she told me I needed to lightly pat the baby to get it to burp. I would love to hear some superstitions that Americans have! Feel free to message me and tell me all about them.
