When people hear that my family were missionaries in the Philippines and that my siblings and I grew up in a foreign country, there is always a slew of questions that follow. One of the most frequent questions we get asked is “What was your hardest adjustment back to America?” That is the question that I will answer today.
Speaking English all the time is one of the hardest adjustments in moving back to America. My parents spoke English in our home, but anywhere outside of the home, we spoke Cebuano to people. So, coming back to America where everything is English all the time is hard! When you don’t know an English word, you can’t substitute a Cebuano word. Some times, the Cebuano words just want to come out, and there are no English words for what you want to say! Having to speak English 100% of the time is a challenge.
Do you have any questions you would like me to answer about the Philippines or our adjustment to America? Message me and I will answer them in my next post!
